We all must have used the word talent at some point in our lives, whether for ourselves or some other person.
But, to date, we have not been able to learn the nuances of talent, genius, skill, skill development, efficiency, experience, determination, and the right knowledge and differentiate them properly.
That is why we declare any interest we have as our talent. We consider our interest in dancing, singing, painting, sports, and cooking as our unique talents.
If all this is not a lack of knowledge, then what is?
What Talent Does Mean?
Why are we not interested in becoming data scientists, philosophers, software engineers, computer scientists, journalists, news anchors, politicians, etc., in the early stages of our life?
Or why are we not interested in becoming plumbers, artisans, barbers, electricians, hawkers, fishers, sex workers, etc.?
Or why not consider them as our talent?
Why don’t we tell our kids that “you want to be a good hawker or sex worker”?
Know one thing that we will neither find our talent in big works, nor we will show our interest in any small task.
Because our life is not going on amid big tasks, nor do we have the knowledge of big tasks so that we can understand them as our interest.
And we consider small tasks as small because we see bigger works than those where we can get more respect and prestige.
We, our children or any other person, establish interest in our/their mind, which is obtained from the environment around us/them or related to our/their lives.
Our passions are born within us through the external world, whether they’re derived from TV or the culture of our life.
We often make this mistake that we take our interest as our talent. And then the bigger mistake we make is that we start wanting to earn money very soon out of our interest.
And if we fail to earn money from our interest, then our interest changes again. It is all due to a lack of experience and knowledge.
For example, you must have experienced at some point in your life that when you ask a 7-year-old child what they will become when they grow up, what will that child tell you?
Think… they will share their interest first.
They will talk about becoming a doctor based on their experiences related to the doctor or doctors around them.
Or would imitate one of their favourite characters on TV and express their desire to be like them. Or they will talk about becoming like their teacher or like a singer.
But when you ask this question to the same child when they’re 16 or 17 years old, they will tell you an interest that seems genuine and straightforward, although this interest of theirs will still be, an interest.
The above example implies that your interest is not your talent and talent is a myth. Or perhaps talent is overrated.
Your talent is the experience you have in doing a job, and the money you get from doing a job efficiently— is called your profession.
How Is Talent a Myth?
Some people would argue that if having a job is talent, why do so many people still hate it. Because talent is about having fun, where there’s no fun, there’s no talent. That’s what they say.
Now, to counter this argument, I’d like to say that, first of all, as I mentioned, talent is a myth.
However, as the argument also says that everyone’s got a job and that particular job provides them with experience, it means they all are talented, right?
You, me, and every human being on this planet are talented people with special talents.
But, the argument also included that having fun is talent. Meaning, where we feel good, there’s talent?
So, in that case, taking a bath is also a talent? We have fun when we shower. We also feel good by looking at the morning or evening sun. Does it mean it’s also our talent?
Then, why don’t people have those “fun giver talents” as their means to survive and provide for their families?
Because by the end of the day you need money and the things above than providing a good feeling only.
If one knows how to dance in a group of 25 people, then the remaining 24 people would say it’s a talent.
But, those fools don’t know that it all takes practice to learn a particular dance form. Meaning everyone is talented. However, if it’s not providing money, then it’s nothing.
Think for a second, if actors, dancers, musicians, and sports persons weren’t paid, would they ever be regarded as talented?
No, not for a single moment.
And if this hurts you, then all I can say is sorry, but no sorry, because this is not what I am writing it for. Instead, I am writing it to help you find your best self above discovering your natural talents.
You shouldn’t look for fun + no money = so-called talent.
Instead, you should look for fun + money + providing value to others = profession.
That’s what it means to be talented.

1. Not Being Able to Differentiate Between Interests, Talents, and Skills
It’s essential to understand with the care that whatever your interest is, it can’t necessarily be your talent.
However, your interest can become your talent, in which first you will develop skills with experience, and after that, you will be able to convert your interest into talent.
To understand talent properly, it is vital to first understand the difference between interest and skill.
Your interest in some work does not mean that you have to decide your future in that work.
Interest means that you are doing some work to reduce your stress for some time — giving you new energy and a joyful juice.
This is such a process by which you feel happy.
To be proficient in a task or develop skills in a task; is decided based on experience gained by doing that work continuously.
If a person does the same work again and again, then he gives his best in that work, and only then does the person achieve his efficiency in a work, on seeing which people call him a genius or tippler — you’re getting it, right?
It is not that your interest cannot become your talent, but you have to declare your interest as your passion; only then can you make continuous efforts for that interest.
And your skill development in that interest will continue to be the best so that you get proficiency in that interest, and then you will be able to tell it your talent.

A person determines their talent or interest based on their surroundings, such as the popular sport of their country, painting, singing, acting, engineering, etc.
The typical interests or, you could say, easy talents.
But in reality, is this true, or is it false? Because there are many possibilities in the world, your talent can also be made in any other work.
Not having the right knowledge of any task is enough to make a person go astray if the person chooses all the same interests where the mob mentality is already going on.
In that case, it’s certain to deviate because you’re trying to discover the talent in an interest where there is already an ocean of competition.
It seems almost impossible for you to succeed there because many people have acquired skills in that interest before you, so understand why the world would choose you at that time?
Let us try to understand the above thing with the help of an example – five roosters were standing in a row, all of them had a cage in front of them.
Four roosters went to that cage and somehow arranged themselves there, but the fifth rooster did not think it right to go into that cage and paid attention to the right knowledge.
After some time, he came to know that there is a huge cage behind him and if he goes to that cage, he will live his life like a king there, and if any other rooster comes into that cage, he will take a master on it.
The fifth rooster went to the big cage behind him, considering all this.
From the above example, we understand that we should widen the scope of our thinking and always choose our interests other than herd behaviour— where the possibility of being capable remains very high.
Where you can proudly say, “The use of my talent is the proper utilisation of my skills.”
In fact, we decide our interests based on our insufficient knowledge and our social environment. Here we should take the help of books and research to increase our knowledge.
It will provide us with more avenues to determine our interests.
When you feel that you can be interested in this work, then you can also choose it to make your talent.
This choice is not really for making any kind of talent, but it is for developing your skills, and you want to make it a profession from the heart, so it is equivalent to becoming your interest.
If you are interested in any work, you will do that work very well without any sadness or annoyance.
And in that direction, you will be more likely to move forward.
Because your work is of interest to you, you will feel pleasure in doing it.
When you feel happy in your work, you will not hesitate to do that work continuously.
And this will become your efficiency, from which you can earn good money too.
3. Not Showing Determination to Do Something – People With No Talent
Sometimes one finds the proper interest to find their right talent.
But due to the lack of firm determination, they face failure again and again. And from there comes a time when their determination starts to shake badly.
There can be two main reasons for deviating from the path of talent acquisition.
First, the interest that a person had chosen to develop their talent was actually a wrong choice.
Because if there is interest in any work, you do it very comfortably, and then that work does not seem like work; it’s a ritual.

Second, the person cannot set their goals. They’re not focused, so their work feels like a burden.

And to know the path ahead, they always have some guide who can lead them in the right direction, which you and I recognize by the name of the coach, mentor, or any organisation.
But, a person isn’t necessary to be your guide; you could guide your path through other resources as well if you’re lacking people.

Think for yourself that another person had a different financial situation; your situation is in a different environment. You have different resources than that person, they have different thinking, and your thinking is only to become like them.

Patience is the key to unlocking the true potential you’re unable to find inside yourself. Patience is the only medium that allows you to remain focused and reach the destination you’ve always dreamed of.
If you cannot focus on a particular skill, you’re getting impatient to learn it; then it’s a sign that you’re not meant for it.
However, if it’s happening every time you’re trying to learn something, your mind’s getting attracted towards something else, it means you’re impatient.
It’s not about not feeling good; instead, it’s about not making an effort till you feel good.
